Main Functions of Tunnel Washers and Ancillary Equipment

What is a tunnel washer, and how does it differ from the washing machines we use at home? Let's explore the functions of a tunnel washer. This equipment is a multi-compartment, continuous industrial washing system. Through a spiral transport mechanism and segmented programming, it automates the entire laundry process-including pre-wash, main wash, and rinsing-as a continuous flow. It can reduce water consumption by 70%, electricity usage by 60%, and labor requirements by 80%.

Typically serving as the core continuous washing equipment in large-scale commercial laundry facilities, the tunnel washer utilizes a multi-compartment, tunnel-like structure and a transport system to move linens sequentially through pre-wash, main wash, and rinsing stages, enabling uninterrupted, high-volume laundry operations.

Compared to traditional batch-type (intermittent) washing machines, tunnel washers offer higher efficiency and more consistent wash quality. They are also equipped with water circulation and heat recovery systems, which effectively lower the consumption of water and steam. Today, they are widely used in hospitals, hotels, and large-scale commercial laundry plants.

The system primarily consists of three core components-a Continuous Batch Washer, a Water Extraction Press, and an Energy-Saving Tumble Dryer-which work in coordination to complete the entire laundry process.

Let's take a look at the primary functions of these three pieces of equipment:

The Continuous Batch Washer serves as the core unit of the entire system. Its inner drum is constructed from 4mm-thick 304 stainless steel, offering high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and an extended service life. A conveyor system feeds linens into individual washing compartments, each equipped with its own dedicated water circulation and temperature control units. This allows for the fully automated execution of pre-wash, main-wash, and multiple rinsing stages.

Operating on a continuous-flow basis, the machine eliminates the need to wait for the completion of one batch before loading the next, significantly increasing hourly processing capacity. Furthermore, it features an integrated water recovery system that enables the recycling of water resources, thereby reducing water and energy consumption per unit of linen. This unit forms the foundation for high-volume laundry processing within the entire production line.

Water Extraction Press: This unit handles the high-pressure dewatering process following the tunnel washer. It features a heavy-duty frame constructed from 20cm-thick specialized steel, precision-machined using a gantry-style CNC system to ensure exceptional structural rigidity and resistance to deformation or fracture. Once the washed items are loaded into the unit, they undergo high-pressure mechanical compression, which rapidly removes the majority of their moisture content. Compared to centrifugal extraction, this pressing method achieves a lower residual moisture level, significantly reducing the workload for downstream dryers, lowering steam and electricity consumption, shortening drying times, and enhancing the overall energy efficiency of the entire production line.

Energy-Saving Tumble Dryer: This unit handles the final drying stage for linens. The drum is constructed from 304 stainless steel and finished with an anti-stick coating, which prevents lint from accumulating on the interior walls-thereby maintaining high drying efficiency, minimizing fabric wear, and extending the service life of the linens.

The equipment also features a high-efficiency heat exchange system that recovers residual heat, resulting in significant energy savings and reduced consumption. Damp linens-having already undergone a pressing/dehydration process-are loaded into the drum, where they are dried uniformly through a circulating hot-air system, ultimately yielding perfectly dry and clean linens.

These three components are interconnected to form a complete, automated, continuous washing production line, seamlessly integrating the washing, dewatering, and drying processes. The entire workflow is managed by an automated conveyor and transfer system, which eliminates the need for manual handling and significantly enhances both operational efficiency and the quality of the finished products.
